Better Tuition Academy (BTA) provides one-on-one English tutoring for students from Year 3 to Year 12, from eight academies across five locations on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and North Shore: Belrose, Brookvale, Forestville, Mona Vale and Gordon.

English tutoring at BTA covers reading comprehension, creative writing, essay writing, analytical skills, and HSC English preparation across all courses. BTA’s tutors work with students at every level: from building foundational literacy skills in primary school through to HSC Advanced English, Extension 1, and Extension 2.

Sessions are available in-academy, online, or at home, with no lock-in contracts.

Primary school English, Years 3 to 6

One-on-one support for reading comprehension, creative writing, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. BTA tutors build strong foundational literacy skills before high school and prepare students for NAPLAN with targeted practice in reading and language conventions.

BTA offers targeted coaching for the Selective School Test English components, including reading comprehension, persuasive writing, and language reasoning. Sessions build accuracy and confidence under timed conditions, with practice across the specific question types students will face on test day.

How we teach essay writing

One paragraph, marked up the way a tutor marks it.

Students often know what they think about a text and lose marks getting it onto the page. In a one-on-one lesson the tutor works on the paragraph the student has just written, not a model answer.

  1. Find the vague claim.

    Most weak paragraphs have a reasonable idea under a vague sentence. The tutor circles it and asks what the student actually means.

  2. Name the technique.

    A quotation only counts as evidence once the student says what the writer is doing with it, and why.

  3. Rewrite it in the lesson.

    The student rewrites the paragraph there and then, and the lesson report records what was covered and the goal for next time.

Orwell argues that power corrupts even the leaders who promised equality. The one Commandment left on the barn wall, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”, is a paradox: the pigs keep the word “equal” but empty it of meaning.
